Northwestern Mutual Capital is one of the largest investors in the investment grade private placement market. Over five years, we averaged $2.7 billion in privately-placed bonds in more than 82 transactions, providing capital to companies based in the U.S., Canada, Europe and Australia. Our investments span a variety of sectors, from industrial to financial services to energy, and include traditional private placement bonds as well as project finance and asset-backed securities. As of December 31, 2009, Northwestern Mutual's private placement investment grade portfolio had a book value of approximately $20.9 billion.
